having fun with the brand

Sometimes i need to step outside of the norm to design something for the sake of designing something. You know, "art for art's sake".

In this case, i wanted to be a little more playful with the Wold Creative Group logo concepts. With a logo, the brand recognition that encompasses the whole of a company within a symbol, one can hold onto the rigidity of the original design too much. I know that i have that tendency sometimes...and for good reason. With consistency, comes recognition. But, i do think that there is a time and place to let go of some of the standards and create something new with the framework of a logo in order to convey a different message. That is essentially what i did here.

enjoy.

new website - sneak peek

We have done what about 30 other companies have done and hired ourselves to re-design our own website, wolcreative.com. With dynamic navigation, RSS feeds, JAVSCRIPT, AJAX, forms, client login, HTML optimization...etc, it is going to be sweet (completely objective observation there).

the sneak peek is below but here's the best part...the preview is absolutely free! (what can i say, shameless marketer here)

photos...art within the ordinary

I have this tendency to think in images, to create momentary photos like an internal camera obscura. Sometimes, i am lucky enough to have an actual camera with me to capture some of these angles, colors, lines, textures and shapes that seem to catch my eye. Such was the case yesterday where the light of the beautiful sunset allowed me take some photos of seemingly innocuous things. Trying to capture the ordinary things in life in a new, interesting way is a challenge.

This challenge holds true within marketing as well as within photography. Without an interesting angle, a wall is just a wall...a marketing piece is just a marketing piece. There is the need to have a creative presentation of your product/service in order for it to stand apart from the ordinary.

We would love to help you create something unique.

Park City Photos

Park City is an odd blend of environmental ideals, artistic expression, cliche rich within a ski-town atmosphere...and, of course, spectators like me to take in the views. enjoy.

The first snow

According to weather.com, it was 80 degrees here yesterday. The leaves haven’t changed color on any of my trees and yet we are getting the first snow of the season at my house as I am typing this (pic below to prove it). I may be wrong about this, but I could have sworn that there used to be some sort of time period between summer and winter.

But, when it comes down to it, that is just how we roll here in Utah. While other states might take the time for a break between outdoor activities, we go straight from summer hikes to backcountry skiing. We are always outdoors and on advil.

Animal Fun

In spite of the fact that we did not have a stroller and 10 kids swarming around us, my wife and I decided to pay a visit to our local zoo. As I looked at the animals, I started to realize that the animal kingdom is instinctually hilarious. Whether it is an elephant incessantly using its nose to throw dirt on itself or if it is a giraffe working it in an urban fashion photo shoot, these animals were very entertaining. Enjoy.

Logan, UT

As a spur-of-the-moment thing, my wife and I decided to go up to Logan, UT for a night at a bed and breakfast. I can’t fully express to you how much of a reprieve one night away can be, but I highly recommend it…as well as Logan itself because it has a lot of character.

Powder Mountain

Did you know that Powder Mountain has more skiable terrain than any other ski resort in the US? This hidden gem of a ski resort is nestled in the mountains just up the road from Ogden, UT. With the charm of a small, home-grown mountain and the untracked terrain that all but ensures a powder-fill run, Powder Mountain might have to be my new ski resort of choice come this winter. Good mountain. Good people.

Public Service Announcement…according to the Powder Mountain signage, the avalanche danger is apparently “low” at present.

Happy Pioneers Day!

When my wife and I first moved to Utah a couple of years ago we were planning on going out for a nice dinner for our anniversary. Little did we know that there would be parades and fireworks galore in our honor.

As it turns out, the fireworks and celebrations were actually for something called Pioneer Day. If you aren’t from Utah, you probably have no idea what this is. If you are from Utah, you probably wonder why this is bigger than the 4th and New Year’s Eve combined. Anyways, this is a Utah holiday celebrating the permanent settlement of Salt Lake City and people love to celebrate that in a big way around here. It actually is quite fun but my dog Winston isn’t a huge fan of the explosions above our house. Here are a couple of fireworks photos from my driveway.

california

Whilst in California to meet with a client, I have the privilege of staying with some good friends in the Sacramento area. Their house is adjacent to a vast field that begs the passerby to stop and gaze in silence. This morning at 6:30am the clouds were like stained glass windows that the sun majestically illuminated in a warm glow.

Happy 4th!

If you are working today, you shouldn't be. Get out there and enjoy what this day is all about...cooked meat over open flames, igniting small colorful fire hazards and celebrating that we don’t have a monarch.

Happy 4th!
